Deerfield Academy

Where Tradition Meets Innovation

In 1797 Massachusetts Governor Samuel Adams granted a charter to found a school in Deerfield. Today, Deerfield Academy students from 38 countries are writing their own chapters in that 221-year history, and  Deerfield is a place of modern, dynamic scholarship. Through an ever-evolving curriculum, Deerfield offers tools and teachers that encourage curiosity and entrepreneurial leadership in its diverse student body.

Within the student body—659 members strong—young adults are encouraged to succeed; students’ grit and determination are fortified with the support and collaboration of other scholars as they examine the world`s most pressing problems, together. Graduates have gone on to attend Harvard, Yale, and Georgetown University, among other leading institutions of higher education.

Top Programs and Amenities

Deerfield Academy is located on 330 acres in the heart of historic New England. It is a campus with state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, a library, athletics facilities, and dormitories. These resources, along with 40 AP courses and an average class size of 12, help students to share ideas, cultivate friendships, and achieve their full potential.

For example, the next generation of inventors create in the 80,000 square-foot science, math, and technology center, which includes a planetarium and astronomy viewing terrace.

Students are urged to expand or discover their artistic side in the Hess Center for the Arts—home to studios, an art gallery, photo labs, and practice rooms.

Athletes thrive with 90 acres of fields, 21 tennis courts (six covered under a new heated tennis pavilion), three basketball courts, ten squash courts, a pool, two tracks, two synthetic-turf fields, the Hammerschlag Family Boathouse (a 5,900 square-foot rowing facility on the Connecticut River), the Strandberg Fitness Center, and opened just this year, a new indoor Athletics Complex featuring an elevated track, rowing tanks, and an ice hockey rink, among other amenities.

Contributing to a Global Community

Set in a historic village bounded by river, hills, and farms, Deerfield inspires reflection, study, play, abiding friendships, and a defining school spirit. Deerfield students also contribute to the larger community as elementary school mentors, as nonprofit organization volunteers, and through global service programs.

Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Charles Davis explained that this focus on service and academics develops a student’s independence and critical thinking so they can take ownership of their education and develop lifelong skills. “Doing well in school and doing good for the world,” said Davis.

The Academy also offers a summer program for students currently in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade—the Experimentory—which offers young people the opportunity to expand their creativity and their ability to collaborate, and introduces them to boarding school life.
